Gail Riplinger, G.A. Riplinger, born in Columbus Ohio, October 10, 1947, the child of Wilson and Helen (Frech) Ludwig.[1] Little is known about her childhood since she has not spoken much about it in interviews or her books. In a video lecture that Riplinger gave at Temple Baptist Church of Knoxville, Tennessee in 1996, she said she was reared in a Catholic home.[1]
In college Riplinger studied Industrial and Environmental Design, branches of Architecture, although she taught various courses instead of working directly in that field after graduation. Riplinger has stated that she did "postgraduate study at Harvard and Cornell Universities."[2]

The NASB, NKJV, NIV & other Modern Bible Translations have been criticised by Gail Riplinger in her video tapes, dvd's, cd-rom's and her books: "New Age Bible Versions", "The Language of the King James Bible", "Which Bible Is God's Word?"

New Age Bible Versions by Gail Riplinger contains multiple errors, the majority of which are the gross misquoting of other people. In particular, a large portion of the misquoting is of the Bible, B.F. Wescott and F.J.A. Hort.

New Age Bible Versions is controversial because its central theme involves the theory of a conspiracy to replace the Christian Bible with one that teaches New Age doctrines. Riplinger's views have been criticized by both those supporting and opposing the King James Only movement, including James White[3] and David Cloud.[4]

Riplinger has referred to the King James Version of the Bible as being like an "atomic bomb" and has stated, "I call the Authorized King James Version the 'Atomic Version,' the A.V. [...] I call it the Atomic Version because it says in Hebrews 4, 'the weapons of our warfare are powerful..."[3] In a video lecture at Temple Baptist Church of Knoxville, TN, Riplinger, referring to her King James Bible, said, "This is my ammunition pack here. This is my sword and we'll take a few heads off if we have to."[4] As Riplinger told the audience this, she was laughing. Due to controversial comments like these, some King James Only proponents have distanced themselves from Riplinger.

Riplinger has pointed out that the very first question mark in the Bible occurs in Genesis 3 and has said of the question mark: "The question mark sort of looks like a serpent, doesn't it? Hanging from a tree with an eye on the end of it. It's the very first question mark in the Bible. And it's a picture of the devil there..."[5]

Nine minutes into the Berean Baptist Hour video, Riplinger has said that 2 Peter 1:21 is a reference to the King James translators, stating that since the verse reads that "holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" that this means the KJV was written under direct inspiration from God. This is Riplinger's confirmation of the King James Only belief that the translators of the King James Bible were "inspired" by God to write down the English words just as the Bible's original writers had been inspired to write the original autographs in the Hebrew and Greek.[6]

Many Misquotes

A large portion of Riplinger's books and interviews have been found to contain gross errors, such as misquotations of the people she mentions in her material. Two of the individuals most misquoted by Riplinger are Bishop Brooke Foss Westcott and Fenton John Anthony Hort, 19th-century British scholars who worked on a Greek text of the New Testament that was used in the translation of the English Revised Version of 1881 and the American Standard Version of 1901.

In New Age Bible Versions, Riplinger claims that God has struck some "new version" Bible editors with the loss of their voice; Westcott is one of the editors of whom Riplinger has made this claim:

Westcott's biographer cites that in 1858 "he was quite inaudible" and by 1870 "His voice reached few and was understood by still fewer."[2]

Riplinger cites this as coming from the book Life and Letters of Brooke Foss Westcott, Vol. 1, written by his son, Arthur Westcott. The first misquote is from a line that actually tells of Westcott as a young man, as remembered by a Sir Dalrymple, who recalls, in a letter, Westcott's early years at Harrow School and that he was "shy, reserved, sensitive, a laborious student." Here is the actual paragraph from where Riplinger took her misquoted words:

He [Westcott] took his turn of preaching in Chapel, but he dreaded and disliked the duty, and he was quite inaudible to many of the boys. We knew all the same that his were no common sermons. It has been truly said "the sentences were closely packed with meaning, and the meaning was not always easy."[5] [Bold text added to show the words Riplinger took out of context.]

The second misquoted line was again taken from Life and Letters of Brooke Foss Westcott, Vol. 1. In this case, a Dr. Butler gives another remembrance of Westcott in a letter to his son. Butler says:

You have kindly asked me to give you some impressions as to your father's work and influence at Harrow. [...] The years to which my words will refer are, speaking roughly, from 1860 to 1870. [...] At that time Mr. Westcott, not yet thirty-five years of age, held a very peculiar position at Harrow. He was little known in the School at large. He was not a Form Master. He had no "Large House" to administer. His voice was not yet a force in the chapel. It reached but few, and it was understood by still fewer. But even then he had at least two spheres of influence - his own pupils on the one hand, and the Masters on the other.[6]

Riplinger not only cut the two quotes from two different places in the original source but she also quoted the source incorrectly, leaving out the words that make the context clear, and making up her own quotation. Westcott never permanently lost his voice; he was simply known to have a quiet voice when he preached.

Riplinger also accuses Westcott of being a "spiritualist," although there is no evidence of this in any of Westcott's or his son's books. In New Age Bible Versions, Riplinger states:

The Greek Text used to translate the NIV, NASB and others was an edition drastically altered by a Spiritualist (one who seeks contact with the dead through seances), who believed he was in the "new age." [2]

Here Riplinger cites Life and Letters of Brooke Foss Westcott, Vol. 2, by Arthur Westcott. There is nothing in the book implicating Westcott as a "spiritualist"; the page cited contains a letter written by the Bishop in 1898, concerning the uncertainty of changing times as a new century was about to begin and the Industrial Revolution was advancing more rapidly. In the letter, Westcott notes "the struggles of a new age."[7] The "new age" Westcott is referring to was the "new era" of change. The term "New Age", as it is used today, was not yet heard of in 1898.

On page 425 of New Age Bible Versions, after having accused Westcott and Hort of mesmerism, Riplinger states:

Westcott took the wand and relayed it into the 20th century.

Reference 128 is attached to this comment and is highly controversial. On page 676 of New Age Bible Versions, the reader will find that reference note 128 presents a bold and unfounded false accusation against B.F. Westcott. Under reference note 128 Riplinger implies that B.F. Westcott and W.W. Westcott were the same person:

The articles on Hermetic doctrine in Blavatsky's Theosophical Dictionary "were contributed at the special request of H.P.B. [ Helena Blavatsky ] by Brother W.W. Westcott [ William Wynn Westcott ]."

Riplinger does not cite the page number in Blavatsky's book where this quotation can be verified. Riplinger continues (same page):

She [Blavatsky] mentions B.F. Westcott, the subject of this past chapter, several times in her other books.

Riplinger does not say what these "other books" by Blavatsky are and offers no references. Riplinger continues (same page):

B.F. Westcott's son points out that his father's signature was almost always read as W., not B., preceeding [sic] his last name. (See Life of Westcott, p. 450.)

Riplinger leaves off whether it is page 450 in Volume 1 or Volume 2 of Life and Letters of Westcott. References to B.F. Westcott's handwriting are actually found on page 449-450 of Vol. 2. Nowhere on page 449-450, or elsewhere in the two volumes, does Arthur Westcott say his father's signature was almost always read as a W preceding his last name. On page 449, Arthur Westcott quotes from several letters written by his father's colleagues who remarked that Westcott's handwriting and signature were often illegible or not decipherable. One of the colleagues mentions that he had come up with "50" possible interpretations for Westcott's signature, some of them being (pg. 450) "N. Bowtell, W. F. Coutauld, W. Frontith, W. Frountell, W.J. Hewlett, W. Honteth, W. Howlette, J. Menteith, W. Matock, J. Monteith, W. Nontall, W. Nontick, W. Nontioll, W. Nuntell, W. Rontish, W. Slontish, W. Swintott, W. Sweetett, W. Trontide, W.S. Untill, W. Wartell, W.J. Watcott, W. Watell, W.H. Watell, W.J. Waterloo, W.F. Westroll..." Nowhere on this list is there a "W. Westcott" or "W.W. Westcott." On page 450, Arthur Westcott features a fascimile of Westcott's signature as an example of how illegible it was.

Riplinger continues (same reference note) to draw false parallels between B.F. Westcott and W.W. Westcott:

The similar identity of these two is not a matter of historical record. W.W. Westcott was the name given by the London Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn as its founder. [Bold text added for emphasis]

Riplinger does not tell her readers that the birth dates and death dates (the historical facts) of both of these men are entirely different. Anglican Bishop B.F. Westcott was born 1/12/1825 and died on 7/27/1901; William Wynn Westcott was born 12/17/1848 and died on 7/30/1925. These two men were born 23 years apart and died nearly 24 years apart. William Wynn Westcott's name was not the name given to him when he became the founder of the London Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn; it was his name from birth. History shows there is no similarity between these two men, except they had the same last name. Despite this, Riplinger continues, in the same footnote, to draw parallels by writing of W.W. Westcott's occultic activity with the assumption that it somehow matches the life of B.F. Westcott:

Strangely W.W. Westcott's motto "Vincit omnia veritus" [sic] (Truth conquers all things) rings like B.F. Westcott's "they loved truth more" and Blavatsky's "There is no religion higher than truth." (Riplinger misspelled veritas.)

After stating more information about the life of W.W. Westcott and implying a parallel between him and B.F. Westcott, Riplinger says:

The connection between B.F. Westcott and the activities attributed to the possible allonym W.W. Westcott are speculation on my part. [Bold Text added for emphasis]

Despite the obvious difference in birth and death dates, Riplinger calls W.W. Westcott's name an "allonym" of B.F. Westcott.

As for accusations that B.F. Westcott was an "evolutionist," the name of "Darwin" is mentioned only two times in and Letters of Westcott, (Vol. 1 only). On page 217, Westcott's son reports that in a letter his father wrote:

Every one is busy with controversy, and one gentleman announced that "the feelings of scorn and contempt were given us by Almighty God to wither such empty sciolists as" Darwin and all naturalists in mass...

B.F. Westcott was borrowing someone's quote about "empty sciolists" (sciolist: "superficial knowledge; one who knows little." http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sciolist.) to express his opinion of "Darwin" and "all naturalists in a mass." The mention of "naturalists" appears to be a reference to Darwin's theory of "natural selection."

On page 335 of Life and Letters of Westcott, Vol. 1, Bishop Westcott is replying in a letter to Mr. A. Macmillan (his publisher), thanking him for giving him some book reading suggestions:

My dear Mr. Macmillan--Very many thanks for the Bishop's sake, and many for myself. I shall be very glad to have "George Eliot." Romola is, I think, the greatest novel of the time. Darwin I have already. If you happen to come across Mill's letter, I shall be very glad to have it.

B.F. Westcott especially enjoyed reading the works of "George Eliot." The mere mention that Westcott already had something written by Darwin does not prove that Westcott was an "evolutionist," in the same way that owning a copy of the Koran does not make one a Muslim.

The words evolution, evolutionary, evolutionist, and evolutionist do not exist in either volume of Life and Letters of B.F. Westcott and there are no references in any of Westcott's personal books and writings that proclaim any such belief in Evolution.

An example of Riplinger misquoting sources and facts in order to slander "modern versions" of the Bible is found on page 41 of New Age Bible Verions:

Historically, Isaiah 14 has been used as the singular biography of Lucifer...The intervening verses expose his pride in the five "I wills," each a rung in his descent into hell. ("I will" is also the official motto of the U.S. city sporting zip code 60606. In 1966, this same city hatched the NIV.) (New Age Bible Versions, fourth printing, 1994.) [parentheses in the original]

The "U.S. city" with the zip code 60606 is Chicago, even though Chicago has more than one zip code, such as 60601, 60602, 60607, 60610, 60656, et al. The circular reasoning and conspiracy theory in Riplinger's quotation implies that because one of the zip codes of Chicago contains 3 sixes (666), this proves the NIV as evil since the number 666 in the Bible is related to evil.

Chicago has more than one motto, such as "Urbs in Horto," meaning "City in a Garden."[7][8] In actuality, the Chicago motto "I will" does not hold the negative implication that Riplinger has assigned it in her book.[9]

According to the preface of the NIV, the translation was first "conceived in 1965..."[10], not in 1966, and it was sponsored by the New York Bible Society. [11] In the original 1978 preface of the NIV, it states the "group of scholars met at Palos Heights, Illinois..." not Chicago. It appears that Riplinger changed 1965 to 1966 so that the double sixes would match more closely with the 666 connotation. This is an example of the false attachment utilized many times by Riplinger in her books.

Gail Riplinger's Misrepresentation of Modern Bible Translations

In the Berean Baptist Hour video, while displaying the front cover she ripped from an NIV Bible, Riplinger points out that the "new versions" are not "holy" because they change "holy angels" to say just "angels," "removing the word holy." She said that by doing this the modern translations are "secularizing the Bible" and making it difficult to distinguish good angels from bad angels. However, Riplinger does not mention that out of the 94 times that the word angels appears in the KJV, only four of those times list them as "holy angels." This means that the other 90 places in the KJV where angels are mentioned, they are not called "holy angels" but just "angels," the same as the modern Bible versions. Using Riplinger's argument, the KJV also makes it difficult to determine good angels from bad angels in those 90 places. The modern versions say "holy angels" in three out of the four places that the KJV does, meaning that in only one instance the word holy is left off the word angels in the "new versions," and yet the context of the passage in the modern versions makes it clear as to what "kind" of angels are being mentioned. Unjustifiable accusations against the modern Bible translations such as these have caused some of Riplinger's critics to susupect that she is actually out to attack the word of God rather than to defend it.

Little is actually known about Riplinger personally because she has not shared much information about herself in interviews or her books. This could very possibly be due to the fact that she has been divorced twice and is on her third husband, whom she married only two months after her second divorce in 1984--something that, if they had known about it, many of the fundamentalist pastors would have possibly prevented her from teaching their churches during the mid 1990s. There is no known record indicating that she has ever made the divorce issue public and as a result of this most of her followers are unaware. As indicated on the divorce records, both divorces were initiated by her. According to biblical guidelines, neither divorce was on scriptural grounds.

Riplinger ignores the New Testament commands given to women: to not "teach and usurp authority over men" and to be "silent in the church" (not to preach). Yet, she has taught in many fundamental church pulpits where this command has been ignored for the sake of furthering the KJO movement. Contradictorily, she claims to defend the Bible while disobeying important parts of it.

As stated in various biographical information, Riplinger wrote six textbooks in the area of Environmental and Interior Design. These text books, written while married to her second husband in the early 1980s, are: Restaurants: a guide for architects, designers, and developers; Visual merchandising & store design; Offices: a guide for designers; Design Process: a guide for designers & architects; Form & space functions: beginning in environmental design; Plants & interiors: guide for environmental designers. All six were written under her name at the time, Gail Kaleda, and were self-published. They are now out of print. Presently, Kent State University holds copies of these in several of their campus libraries.

Gail is keeping people from the Word of God that they can read and understand in today's language.

The 1611 KJV GAR promotes is older language and harder for people to understand today.
The KJV was once an update. Today's KJV is updated 16 times since the 1611 edition.
Some updates are paraphrases and that is what they are, a paraphrase, like the NLT. Paraphrases are not literal.
In paraphrases, the writer tries to explain the message the best they can for the reader to understand.
We know the Jehova Witness book and the Mormon book are nothing more than another gospel and they are not Bibles.
The original 1611 KJV translators in their letter to the reader, said to use multiple translations to get further understanding of the Scriptures.
Or should we goto the original Herbrew, Greek and not have updated translations?
Christians understand the need for updated translations and some paraphrases to help people understand God's Word.

Gail Riplinger has stated that at least one of her books came "by the direct hand of God" and therefore credits herself as G. A. Riplinger (for "God and Riplinger"). She has elevated herself with God?? Something witches do. She is widely cited by both the King James Only movement and its critics, and believes all current Hebrew and Greek reference tools are part of a New Age conspiracy to corrupt the Bible.

Riplinger does not know Greek, Hebrew, textual criticism, linguistics, principles of translation, logical argumentation, proper citation and documentation standards, competent English grammar and style, or even consistent spelling.

I cannot recommend: "The Language of the King James Bible", "New Age Bible Versions", "Which Bible Is God's Word?" by Mrs. Gail Riplinger. There are many many errors, lies, carelessness, and faulty logic that it cannot be used as a dependable resource. I will not let a Pharisee teach me!

More information I have personally uncovered about Mrs. Riplinger.

I have spent the last 8 months doing research on her and her so-called books, using a fine-tooth comb.

What I have uncovered is quite revealing and amazing. Not only has what I've found confirmed what the best of her "critics" have said but more information that some have not addressed.

I am quite puzzled at how a person who calls herself a child of God can even remotely desire to take people's quotations and writings so blatantly out of context, as she has done in her book NABVs. Most of the men she attacks are, of course, dead men who cannot defend themselves, such as Westcott and Hort and Schaff.

I have uncovered some of the sources she used in writing this book. She has taken the majority of their quotes completely out of context, added words where those words were not found in the originals, all to make them say what she wanted them to say to falsely prove her accusations against them.

When certain men of God kindly approached her about her large errors and inaccuracies, instead of saying, "Thank you, I was wrong and I apologize" and then repent to God for having done them, she lashed out at them by writing another book that KJO suckers are still purchasing from her.

She takes advantage of the unlearned and misleads the simple, pretending to take sides with them.

I am not alone in believing she is a provocateur agent of some sort. You have Rick Warren CFR tramping over the Evangelical church today and the devil, needing a way to get into the tight and solid Fundamental church, has found a secret weapon named Gail Riplinger to do a clever number on them.

Her lies and false teachings have caused MANY divisions in churches and have amassed a great deal of confusion even though God's words says that He is not the author of confusion. Once her teachings invaded MY church, it became personal.

Mrs. Riplinger claims to have taught English, which, unfortunately, I find laughable because she neither writes nor speaks as a professor who taught English to anyone, anywhere, and under any circumstances. When you hear her lecture, her poor use of English grammar is horrendous, at best.

One huge thing that disqualifies Riplinger is that she has, many times, taught from church pulpits where the pastors are too stupid and full of KJO pride to acknowledge the clear FACT that God has forbidden this in several places in His word.

I am making a record of all my findings on Riplinger's lies and slanders in her books and videos and will be compiling an expose very soon.

She has the chance to come clean, apologize, and ask the Lord to forgive her for what she has done; and prove she has done so by pulling the books she has produced over the last 13 years.

If she does this and is genuine about it she will be greatly commended and obtain good favor and blessing from the Lord. Otherwise, she stands to be harshly judged for her hypocrisy, slander, and lies--all of which God's word says He HATES.

Defending the truth is very important--especially against those who claim they come in truth but actually come in deceit just like the devil and his angels.

As God's word warns: Be sure, your sins will find you out.

Lies and Misinformation, April 18, 2006

The title of this review might sound harsh, but it is meant to point to the truth of this matter. This book is a serious matter because it is mostly based on poor research, paranoia, bias, and just plain untruth and misinformation.

I have been researching GA Riplinger since some of her materials began circulating among some men in my small fundamental church. This material is still circulating, at present, and is putting my church body at risk for contention, dissention, and sneaky persecution of NKJV users.

I have personally studied and researched the NKJV for over ten years and I can say that I have verified Riplinger's statements about it to be not just misleading but downright slanderous.

In between the irritating kindergarten level rhymes of this NABVs book Ms. Riplinger has many charts. It is these charts that reveal her dishonesty. Most readers I know do not check her words and her research for themselves and they do not verify if the information in her charts is correct and, instead, they just accept her words as if the person they are putting their trust in would not dare lie to them.

Most KJVOs I know personally are well-meaning people, but they only say what they say and believe what they believe because someone else, like Riplinger, told them in a book or a video. They have not done their own footwork into what this woman claims and teaches.

I began my research into GA Riplinger's work with an open mind and with fairness. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. When I began uncovering lie after lie, half truths, twisting of scripture, God's word being taken out of context, down-right fabrication of false information, and vicious slander I, as a Christian, had to be honest about what I found.

The number one crime committed in this book is her untruthful smearing of Westcott and Hort. She has painted them as New Age occultists who were out to rewrite the Greek text. Through this book she has placed multiple quotes from them. They sound like horribly evil men... until you get a hold of the original books Riplinger quotes from. I compared many of her supposed quotations of Westcott and Hort against the real sources she cites in her footnote references and found that she has totally twisted their words out of context. When a person reads what these man actually wrote it becomes clear they were wonderful godly men and not the monsters she has made them out to be. Why did she do this? I don't know except it appears she has some kind of agenda and the Fundamental church is her target.

I challenge every person who has trusted Riplinger to compare her quotes of Westcott and Hort and others with the original sources. You will be amazed at how she has taken words from, added words to and altered their quotes to make them say the opposite of what they actuallly said. God's word says this kind of thing (lying and slander) is wicked and not befitting a child of God.

One fact that a lot of KJVOs who defend her might not know is that Ms. Riplinger teaches in church pulpits where men are present in the congregation. For anyone who is a fundamental bible believer, the bible is clear about women not teaching in the church and not usurping authority over men, etc. There is no way to get around this today because God and His word never change. If this was the rule in Paul's day it is the same rule today... and the same bible. In two videos she is speaking at Temple Baptist Church in Tennessee and in the other she is teaching at Berean Baptist, I believe it is in NC.

The fact that Ms. Riplinger teaches during church services in spite of the KJV clearly saying this is wrong, disqualifies her as a teacher. No fundamentalist can say they are that fundamental and support her work after knowing this. GA has not been given clearance by God to change the rules.

I have verified many of the charts in this book and have found time and time again where she accuses the "new versions" of doing this or that, or saying this or saying that, or omitting this or adding that, only to find that it is just simply NOT true at all. This book is padded with a lot of fluffy, extra words and strange kindergarten-like abstract rhymes. She is clever in how she insinuates her own opinions and speculation in between other people's quotations in order to make the reader hear what she wants them to hear. This is how she has swayed a lot of unwary or undiscerning individuals and I know several of her victims personally. Her writings have caused a lot of unnecessary contention in my church.

It saddens me that people will read someone's book and take it at face value just because the author comes across nice and claims they are honest.

Ms. Riplinger claims to be a Christian and yet I can find no personal salvation testimony in her works, other than "I was saved at Kent State University." Usually a person in the public eye will say what occurrences were taking place in their life that made them want to come to the Lord. When I wrote AV Publications to ask if they had a copy of her personal Christian testimony and salvation experience on their site I received a letter back that offered a CD that I could call them and purchase. The computer which this email came from, as revealed by the headers of the email, was named RIPLINGER1, which reveals that AV Publications belongs to her and/or her family, although she never claims association with it other than it publishes some of her books.

As a Christian, Ms. Riplinger's response was far from Christ-like when others who had found serious inaccuracies in her NABVs book notified her in a proper and kind manner. She responded by not writing them back but going public in her book "King James Version Ditches Blind Guides" where she viciously attacks them, calls them names, and shows all sorts of horrendous behavior not befitting a Christian. One of the men she attacks in that horrid book is Dave Cloud, a fellow KJVO. Another is the Berean Call's Dave Hunt who happens to prefer the KJV.

It is one thing to know that some other new versions have problems and that we should call them poor paraphrases at best, but to make up more errors than what are actually already in some of them is downright wicked and not acceptible to God. This is what Riplinger does in this book NABVs. She also does this in many of her interview videos.

Do not read her books unless you have your bible in the other hand, at all times, because this book is full of a lot of darkness and at times almost reads more like a lesson in the details of New Age practice than it does a reference book about non-KJV bible versions. Above all else, pray for wisdom and discernment before you read this, if you must read it at all.
